Following the adventures of the titular Percy Jackson, a troubled tween who discovers he is a demigod, the series incorporates the fantastical elements of gods and monsters with the realistic trials of a kid struggling with dyslexia, ADHD, and absent parents.

Blending myth and fantasy with middle school milestones, the Percy Jackson books have struck a chord with young readers while also garnering praise from critics and educators. The quick-paced adventure, multifaceted characters, clever humor, and incorporation of classical legends have inspired an avid fandom. The series tackles themes of bravery, friendship, sacrifice, and finding one’s place in a complex world. Now consisting of five riveting books released from 2005 to 2009, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series has become a contemporary classic of children’s literature and a modern gateway to the magic of Greek mythology. Its popularity has led to a TV adaptation, with the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series releasing on Disney+ in December 2023.

The Lightning Thief by Rick RiordanThe Lightning Thief (2005)

The Lightning Thief introduces readers to 12-year-old Percy Jackson, a boy with dyslexia and ADHD who has been kicked out of multiple boarding schools. During a field trip to a museum, Percy’s math teacher Mrs. Dodds transforms into a Fury and attacks him. Percy’s Latin teacher Mr. Brunner, who is actually the centaur Chiron in disguise, throws Percy a pen that turns into a sword named Riptide, allowing Percy to vaporize Mrs. Dodds.

After this incident, Percy is sent to Camp Half-Blood, a training ground for demigods. He learns that he is the son of Poseidon and that Greek gods and monsters are real. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect. To prove his innocence, Percy sets out on a quest with Grover the satyr and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, to retrieve the bolt from Hades in the Underworld.

On their journey westward across America, Percy and friends battle iconic Greek monsters including Medusa, the Chimera, and the Furies. They visit locations from Greek myths like the Lotus Hotel and Casino and the Lair of Polyphemus the Cyclops. After confronting Hades, they realize the true thief is Luke, a son of Hermes who stole the bolt to start a war between the gods. Percy, Grover, and Annabeth make it back to New York and return the lightning bolt to Zeus, preventing catastrophic war on Mount Olympus.

The Sea of Monsters by Rick RiordanThe Sea of Monsters (2006)

In the second book, Percy’s summer camp, Camp Half-Blood, comes under threat when Thalia’s magical pine tree is poisoned. This poisoning also weakens the camp’s protective magical borders. Percy has a vision that the Golden Fleece can heal the tree and camp, so he sets sail with Annabeth and Tyson, Percy’s newly discovered cyclops half-brother, to find it.

Their journey takes them through the Sea of Monsters, where they face iconic obstacles like the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, Circe’s island, and Polyphemus the Cyclops. Aided by Hermes and other allies against Luke’s forces, Percy retrieves the Fleece from Polyphemus’ island. However, Luke tricks them into delivering the Fleece straight to him. After a showdown aboard Luke’s demon cruise ship Princess Andromeda, Percy and friends manage to recover the Fleece and save Camp Half-Blood from invasion.

The Titan’s Curse by Rick RiordanThe Titan’s Curse (2007)

In the third book, Percy and friends confront a dangerous new prophecy that a child of the Big Three (Zeus, Poseidon, Hades) will either save or destroy Mount Olympus when they turn 16. While on a mission to help forest satyrs, Annabeth becomes trapped alone holding the weight of the sky for the Titan Atlas. Percy leads the quest to save her, battling legendary monsters like the Nemean Lion, skeleton warriors, and the Manticore along the way.

They receive aid from Zoë Nightshade, a huntress of Artemis, as well as Bianca and Nico di Angelo, a brother-sister pair of children of Hades. However, Bianca is lost on the quest. The goddess Artemis is also captured until Percy, Grover, and Thalia arrive to hold up the sky and force Atlas back into his punishment. In the end, the prophecy remains unclear as Zoë and Artemis defeat Atlas together instead of the child of the Big Three who turned 16.

The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick RiordanThe Battle of the Labyrinth (2008)

When Percy’s friend Grover gets lost and trapped in the deadly Labyrinth of Daedalus that exists underground across America, Percy enters the Labyrinth to find and rescue him. Percy learns Luke plans to invade their camp using Ariadne’s string to guide his army through the Labyrinth’s shifting mazes.

Along with Annabeth and their new ally Rachel Elizabeth Dare, Percy navigates the maze and overcomes dangers like Kampê the jailer, Briares the Hundred-Handed One, Janus, and more. They obtain Ariadne’s string and Daedalus’ wings but Luke manages to bring back the Titan lord Kronos using his own body as a vessel. In the climactic battle, Daedalus sacrifices himself while Percy escapes and Kronos’ forces are temporarily held back from attacking Camp Half-Blood.

The Last Olympian by Rick RiordanThe Last Olympian (2009)

As Percy nears his 16th birthday, the Second Titan War breaks out in New York City. Percy leads Camp Half-Blood against Kronos’ forces, losing many allies when Manhattan is invaded. He learns of the full great prophecy that says he will make a fateful choice to either preserve or raze Olympus when he turns 16. Percy bathes in the River Styx, making his body invulnerable except one small weak point, before leading an assault on Olympus.

After many grueling battles, heartbreaking casualties, and the knowledge that Luke intentionally rebelled to gain favor from Kronos, Percy and friends prevail. Luke commits the ultimate sacrifice, stabbing himself to destroy Kronos from within. Percy then nobly turns down godhood, as he does not wish to leave his mortal friends and family. The gods reward Percy and friends as heroes, while Percy heads home for his sophomore year, ready for more demigod adventures.
