Nowadays, people spend most of their time staring at the screen every day. At one moment you’re browsing your social media feed on your smartphone and you’re checking out the NBA playoffs tonight on your computer the next.
After all, the information is available online and in digital format for the most part, even the books. Reading a book is supposed to be an escape from all that. However, since eBooks were invented, more and more people prefer to continue staring at the screen. But why is that? Well, let’s compare printed books and eBooks so we can find out.
The convenience of eBooks
There are advantages to having a book stored in digital format. If you have an eBook reader, you can pretty much store lots of books on one device, eliminating the need for book shelves and physical space to store them.
In other words, you can carry multiple books with you at all times and enjoy them as long as your eBook reader’s battery lasts. Since people live busy lives, they don’t often have the time to sit at home and read an actual book in peace. Henceforth, if you can’t read at home, you might as well read on the go.
The value of traditional books
As mentioned before, traditional books are meant to be an escape from staring at the screen all day. Instead, you can stare at paper but natural lighting and environment isn’t as nearly as bad for your eyes. Moreover, there’s simply something about holding the book that makes it invaluable compared to everything else.
What’s more, you can read a book before bedtime and still manage to fall asleep as there’s no blue light from device screen to irritate you without you even realizing it. And there’s no denying the fact that having a book collection is simply awesome.
So which option is better?
There’s no answer to this question as the right choice is the one you opt for. Your preferences are what matters in the end. Both eBooks and traditional printed books have their own advantages and disadvantages so both options are equally viable. People will always choose one over the other depending on the circumstances.
However, there’s one thing we can all agree on and that’s that either option shouldn’t completely replace the other as that would eliminate the very choice people like to have. Who knows, you might pick up a book to read at home and use an eBook reader while traveling but having to choose one option over the other wouldn’t sit well with book fans in general.
