Book Summary: Behind The Light

Behind The Light is a collection of 80 poems, each expressing a different emotion. It is an assortment of regular experiences that take place in our daily lives, that we are probably too busy to even notice.

I was inspired by a very real, ordinary moment one day, where I exchanged a moment with a lady on the street stringing together garlands, while waiting impatiently at a signal. This gave me a sudden insight into how the view of the world is such a different landscape for each individual.

This provoked me to delve into the notions and emotions we go through constantly – and Behind The Light was born. The emotions are penned down in no particular order, just as life moves along in the same manner.

We all have those days where our hearts and minds are mismatched and we cannot really work out what we feel. You will relate to how love, technology, self-‐doubt, self-‐love and the amalgamation of it all drive life in this day and age.

This is your safe space to rekindle with and actualize all that you feel because once you do, your soul will have more space to sparkle and shine.

Book Review: Behind The Light

Behind the Light tore through my analytical mind and burrowed deep into my ultra-sensitive soul. It slew all my emotions, my desires, and my love for vulnerable writing. I may not know a lot about romance poetry, but I do know a decent amount about feelings, and Aahana Mulla brought all my feelings tumbling out with this gorgeous collection of poems.

This is such a brilliant collection, filled with heart and meaning, all in such a limited amount of words. I’m amazed at how much Aahana Mulla can communicate on a couple of lines and in a handful of words. She captures entire experiences and complicated emotions with a sentence and a title. It left me in awe on a number of occasions.

It also featured some pretty amazing illustrations, which I’m always up for in books. I’d imagine that the print version of this book would make a beautiful gift for someone.

This collection, while in many ways simple, addresses some of the darkest and most hopeful matters of the human heart. If you enjoy marinating in your feelings or if you often ponder topics like getting over heartbreak, or what it means to love, I would recommend you check out Behind the Light by Aahana Mulla. Now I will include one of many favourite poems from the collection, though I wish I could include them all.

Title: Hollow

I never spoke about my issues,
I used to hide in my room surrounded with boxes of tissues,
I would go out with a big happy face,
No one knew my mind was probably the most deranged
and despondent place.

Till one day,
Somehow, I gained strength from somewhere,
I managed to open my mouth and let my heart and soul be bared.
That day –
I learnt that I wasn’t the only one scared,
That people were happy to listen to my thoughts –
The good, the bad and the ones that sometimes even I didn’t dare!

I realized that I was scared of things that didn’t even
make sense when I said them out loud,
But speaking about them, slowly lifted that self created
Deep dark cloud.
And when that cloud completely lifted,
I only felt heartfelt gratitude to the ones who held me –
When I truly believed my whole existence had drifted.

Thank you to them now and forever,
Everyday since then, I do my best to pass on the favour.

Speak out your issues,
There is always someone to listen –
And also others,
who are going through similar experiences as you.
