Author Interview: Nandini Dhanani | The Author of Finding Myself

Date:

Nandini Dhanani, the author of Finding Myself, was born in Mumbai, raised in Dubai and lived in Malaga, Spain. She currently lives in Mumbai. Wife of a businessman and mother to three kids, Nandini has always put the family at the apex of her priorities. They have been her learning curve.

Nandini’s writings have appeared in a local English newspaper ‘Sur’ in Malaga and has served as a celebrity columnist for an Indian magazine ‘Aaina’ popular in the Balearic region.

In Mumbai, she made a significant contribution as an educator at Podar International School. Her cross culture influences have helped shape Nandini’s writing sensibilities.

After experimenting in script writing, her passion stirred her to write fictional literature which brings us to her debut book.

TBE: Tell us about your book, can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

Nandini Dhanani: Priya Wadhwani is a relatable and lovable character. She is stubborn yet giving. Modern yet traditional. The journey of her life is like any young girl of today. Her life seems to be overflowing with wrong choices ranging from drugs to men. As she decides to come back to her roots; India, she meets her Mr.Right. Priya Wadhwani’s life is complicated as is her fate.

TBE: How did you come up with the idea for ‘Finding Myself’?

Nandini Dhanani: The idea germinated at the time when I was searching for a partner for my daughter.

TBE: What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

Nandini Dhanani: Your life is how you make it. You could have all the luxuries and comforts and yet be unhappy. One needs to understand that happiness is a state of mind.

TBE: Who’s your favorite character from the book and why?

Nandini Dhanani: Besides Priya my favorite character is the Master who without pushing Priya too much guides her towards spirituality. Spirituality that was within her but she had been unable to tap it.

TBE: What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

Nandini Dhanani: Integrating spirituality in whatever they do in life. Being mindful and compassionate.

TBE: According to you what is the most challenging thing for budding writer?

Nandini Dhanani: The biggest challenge is to write and have someone encourage you to continue writing despite the flaws that the first draft may have. Every budding writer is looking out for appreciation for his/her writing. Secondly, to find a good publisher and editor.

TBE: Do you read much and if so, who are your favorite authors?

Nandini Dhanani: I am an avid reader and my favorite authors are Elif Shafak and Dan Brown.

TBE: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Nandini Dhanani: Spend time with family, take holidays, read, play bridge, squash and walk on the beach.

TBE: In your opinion, what is the most important thing about any book?

Nandini Dhanani: The book should resonate with the reader. It should have a subtle message.
