The Book Buying Ban: My Journey to (Not) Buying More Books

Join the movement toward mindful book consumption and intentional reading

Date:

Hey, fellow bookworms! If your bookshelves are stuffed to overflowing, your bank account is reeling from bookstore splurges, and your to-be-read pile towers over you, listen up. I was stuck in that same endless cycle of book buying and feeling guilty about all the unread titles piling up. So I decided to challenge myself to a book buying ban for the month of February. And let me tell you – it was life changing!

What is Book Buying Ban?

A book buying ban means putting a temporary halt on bringing any new books into your home, whether paperbacks or ebooks. No impulse grabs at the bookstore, no 1-click digital purchases, no snatching up the latest buzzworthy release. As a lifelong bibliophile, this seemed daunting at first. But implementing a short-term ban gave me the reset I didn’t know I needed when it came to my reading habits.

Addressing the Skepticism

Now I know the idea of a bookworm voluntarily abstaining from buying books sounds unbelievable. Believe me, I was skeptical of the idea at first too! But the more I reflected, the more I realized how stuck I felt in a vicious cycle of continually acquiring new reads before finishing the old ones. A book buying ban felt like the perfect way to step back, gain perspective, and rebuild my relationship with reading. Approached with the right mindset, it ended up being an empowering and refreshing challenge.

Why I Considered a Book Buying Ban

Financial Control:

Let’s be honest – buying books adds up, even if it’s just cheap paperbacks here and there. But all those small purchases can drain your wallet fast. I realized I was spending way more money on new books than I thought. A buying ban would allow me to be more mindful and seek out free or lower-cost options when I wanted something new to read. I could get my fix through libraries, used book sales, and swapping with friends.

TBR Pile Woes:

We’ve all felt that guilt when a shiny new book catches our eye, so we buy it, but it just gets added to the ever-growing to-be-read pile. My unread stack was overflowing and anxiety-inducing. I knew tackling it all at once wasn’t realistic. But not bringing in new books for a month could help me chip away at the stories I already owned. The ban would force me to finally dive into the pile of books staring me down.

Rediscovering Reading Joy:

Browsing my bookshelves, I realized I felt more overwhelmed than the excitement I wanted books to spark. Too many options, too much pressure to keep up with the latest releases. I hoped redirecting my full attention to the stories already surrounding me could help rediscover the pure happiness I felt as a kid anytime I opened a book. The ban was a chance to slow down and reconnect with why I fell in love with reading.

Mindful Consumption:

Admittedly, I’d never thought about the environmental impact of my book buying habits before. But taking a step back made me realize just how much waste I was creating with such frequent purchases. So many books I bought on a whim ended up collecting dust. A buying ban would force me to be more conscious about what I brought into my home, only acquiring stories I was committed to actually reading right away.

Implementing My Book Buying Ban

The Ground Rules:

After some thought, I decided on instituting a complete book buying ban for the full month of February – no new book purchases from February 1st up until the 29th. The only exceptions would be receiving books as gifts and book-exchange with friends or co-workers. But I would permit no new releases, no casually browsing bookstores, no spontaneous digital purchases. I knew I needed strict rules to succeed.

Finding Alternatives to Buying:

Once my ban parameters were set, I needed a plan for how to satisfy my book cravings over the next month without spending. I became a frequent visitor at my local library and ebook apps like Libby became invaluable. I also did an old school book swap with my fellow bookworm co-worker, trading titles from our personal collections so we each had “new-to-us” stories to enjoy.

Resisting Temptation Triggers:

Let’s be real – with my book addiction, sticking to the ban would be a challenge whenever buying temptation struck. So I tried to eliminate triggers that could weaken my resolve. Unsubscribing from all marketing emails and notifications from book retailers ensured alluring sales wouldn’t land in my inbox. I avoided wandering into the cozy bookstores where my self-control always crumbled. Whenever the urge to one-click a hot new release hit, I’d add it to a future wish list to revisit when the ban lifted.

My Book Buying Ban Experience: Successes and Struggles

Victories Both Big and Small:

I’m proud to say I made it the full month without caving once! Crossing book after book off my TBR pile and finally reading titles that had been gathering dust for ages felt so deeply satisfying. Without the pressure of new releases constantly calling my name, I was able to focus on simply appreciating the art and craft of storytelling again. I also saved around $100 on impulse buys that month – an added perk! Even small accomplishments like walking out of a bookstore empty handed gave me a rush of motivation to keep going.

Frustrations and Tests of Willpower:

Let’s be real though, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Perhaps the biggest challenge was resisting the fear of missing out when a long-awaited book by one of my favorite authors, The Women by Kristin Hannah, hit shelves. I itched to one-click purchase it the day it released. Instead I pushed through by reading reviews from fellow fans and listening along to online book club discussions about the story so I could stay involved. Waiting weeks for popular library titles also tested my minimal patience at times. But it forced me to check out lesser-known books I might have otherwise overlooked. My TBR exploration uncovered some real hidden gem reads!

Should You Give a Book Buying Ban a Try?

Assess Your Current Habits:

Before diving headfirst into a book buying ban of your own, take some time to step back and evaluate your current relationship with books. Do you typically feel overwhelmed or anxious about an overflowing unread pile? Or does your to-be-read stack instead feel manageable? Are you overspending on new releases but then regretting those impulse purchases? Or are you generally happy with your buying habits? Being honest about where you stand now will help you determine if a ban could truly benefit your reading life or if it might feel like overkill.

Consider Alternative Approaches:

Going completely cold turkey with a book buying ban may sound too extreme if your habits don’t feel too out of control. And that’s understandable! In that case, try smaller, more sustainable changes first – set a reasonable monthly book buying budget for yourself and stick to it diligently, limit new purchases to just your very favorite genres or authors, or balance each new book you bring home by donating another from your shelves. Baby steps can make a big difference over time.

Final Reflections from My Book Buying Ban Experience

An Empowering Perspective Shift for the Long Run:

Stepping back from book buying, even temporarily, gave me a chance to completely reframe my mindset. Rather than viewing it as self-deprivation, I reset my outlook to see it as an experiment in reigniting the joy of reading for its own sake. My short-term ban motivated me to keep prioritizing intention and mindfulness with book buying rather than endlessly accumulating. This refreshed outlook is something I’ll carry with me for the long run.

Parting Words of Encouragement:

To all my fellow bookworms, I hope hearing about my experience gave you ideas and inspiration to examine your own reading habits and how a book buying ban could potentially transform your relationship with books. The journey isn’t always easy, but with the right mindset it can be incredibly rewarding. Wherever you’re at, embrace the joy of reading first and foremost. I’ll see you among the bookstacks soon, friends. Happy reading until then!
